Inter speaker variability of labial coarticulation with the view of developing a formal coarticulation model for French

چکیده
Explaining the effects of labial coarticulation is a difficult problem that gave rise to many studies and models. Most of the time small corpora were exploited to design these models. In this paper we describe the realization and exploitation of a corpus with ten speakers. This corpus enables the most invariant labial features (protrusion, stretching and lip opening) to be established. Then we propose a formal prediction algorithm that relies on a standard phonetic description of French phonemes. We conducted a first evaluation of this algorithm that shows its relevancy.

A phonetic concatenative approach of labial coarticulation
Predicting the effects of labial coarticulation is an important aspect with a view to developing an artificial talking head. This paper describes a concatenation approach that uses sigmoids to represent the evolution of labial parameters. Labial parameters considered are lip aperture, protrusion, stretching and jaw aperture. A first formal algorithm determines the relevant transitions, i.e. tho...
متن کاملInvestigating variation in English vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in a longitudinal phonetic corpus
Understanding the nature of individual variation in speech, particularly the mechanism underlying such variability, is increasingly important, especially for research on sound change, since such investigations might help explain why sound change happens at all and, conversely, why sound change is so rarely actuated even though the phonetic preconditions are always present in speech. The present...
متن کاملAn Ultrasound Study of Lingual Coarticulation in Children and Adults
There have been a number of studies which compared coarticulatory patterns in children and adults, but these studies have produced conflicting results, particularly with respect to anticipatory lingual coarticulation. This study used articulatory measures derived from ultrasound imaging, in order to establish any differences between child and adult coarticulatory patterns, and to quantify the d...

Speaker variability in the coarticulation of the vowels / a , i , u / was investigated in / C iVC 2^ / pseudo-words, containing the consonants /p . t .k .d ^ n M .r / . These words were read out in isolation by fifteen male speakers of Dutch. The formants F |_3 (in Bark) were extracted from the steady-state of each vowel / a j , u / . Coarticulation in each of 1200 realisations per vowel was me...
متن کاملTest of the movement expansion model: anticipatory vowel lip protrusion and constriction in French and English speakers.
The modeling of anticipatory coarticulation has been the subject of longstanding debates for more than 40 yr. Empirical investigations in the articulatory domain have converged toward two extreme modeling approaches: a maximal anticipation behavior (Look-ahead model) or a fixed pattern (Time-locked model). However, empirical support for any of these models has been hardly conclusive, both withi...
